How to Make Sand Wax Candles: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

What you need

Pearled sand wax in the colour you like (500 g or 1 kg bags are common sizes).

Wicks: eco wicks or pre-waxed cotton wicks. Mirfa sand wax packs include wicks.

A heat-safe container: glass jars, ceramic bowls, terracotta pots, shells or even a tea glass.

Optional: decorative layers of different colours, dried flowers on top (keep them away from the wick).

Step by step

1. Clean and dry the container.

2. Push the wick into the centre so it touches the bottom and stands straight.

3. Pour the sand wax around the wick, leaving about 1 cm of wick above the surface.

4. For a layered look, pour different colours one after another and tap the container gently to level each layer.

5. Light the wick. The wax around it melts into a small pool and burns cleanly. When you blow it out, the melted part hardens again.

How much wax do I need?

Roughly, a small glass of about 200 ml takes around 150–200 g of sand wax, and a 1 kg bag fills about five to six medium glasses. Fill to about 1 cm below the rim.

Tips for a clean burn

Trim the wick to about 1 cm before each use to reduce smoke.

For wide bowls use two or three wicks spaced evenly so the whole surface burns.

You can reuse sand wax: scoop out the burnt part around the wick, top up with fresh wax and add a new wick.

Safety

Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from curtains and out of reach of children and pets.
