A scented candle is a simple way to make a home feel calm and welcoming, whether you are hosting guests in the majlis or winding down after work. Here is how to pick the right scent and get the most from every candle.

Pick a scent for each room
Living room and majlis: warm floral scents such as rose and jasmine feel welcoming for guests.
Bedroom: soft, light scents help create a relaxing evening routine.
Kitchen: fresh scents such as mint and lime help freshen the air after cooking.
Bathroom: fruity scents such as peach keep a small room smelling pleasant.
The first burn matters
On the first use, let the candle burn until the whole top surface has melted, usually one to two hours for a small candle. This stops "tunnelling" down the middle and makes the candle last longer.
Make candles last longer
Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each burn.
Burn for no more than about three to four hours at a time, then let it cool.
Keep candles away from air-conditioning vents and fans; moving air makes the flame flicker and smoke.
Safety first
Never leave a lit candle unattended and keep it away from curtains, children and pets.
Stop using a candle when about 1 cm of wax is left at the bottom.
Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Gift sets
Candle gift sets in tins or wooden boxes are an easy gift for Eid, birthdays, Mother's Day and housewarmings.

Why does my candle burn down the middle only?
This is called tunnelling. It usually happens when the first burn is too short. Let the whole surface melt on the first use.
